1. How high a score do I need to get into a prestigious university?

The following table shows the average GPAs for admission to prestigious American universities. Because each school has slightly different grading standards, direct conversion to Canadian GPAs depends on the school's standards. However, it can be seen that students with a GPA of 3.6 or above, meaning they achieved a score of 90% or above in grade 11 or 12 of high school, or achieved a high school graduation average of 92% to 95% or above, have a better chance of admission to the top 50 universities in the United States.

2. What are the benefits of taking AP? Is it necessary to take AP?

Are some students not very satisfied with their grades in the last two years of high school and worried that it will affect their college applications?

At this time, we must talk about the benefits of AP courses:

If students score 3 or above in AP courses, they can not only obtain college credits, but also gain extra points on their subsequent college application essays and demonstrate that they are fully prepared and capable of attending college.

Moreover, among the many applicants to prestigious schools, their academic performance is generally similar, and students' AP scores are often another key point of assessment, so the importance of AP is self-evident.

In addition, AP scores can also be used to offset the academic performance of the subject in grade 12. Taking UBC in Canada as an example, the standard for converting AP scores into academic performance is:

5 = 96 points
4 = 86 points
3 = 80 points
2 = 70 points

3. Are extracurricular activities and volunteer work important?

It is extremely important to choose valuable extracurricular activities to write about and combine them with your own characteristics to write your reflections. You should learn to discover and highlight your shining points, as well as highlight your own characteristics, such as emphasizing your excellent grades, leadership skills, social activities experience, experience reflections and achievement medals.

Taking UBC as an example, you can write about the student’s achievements in up to five different extracurricular activities, as well as the responsibilities they held. The areas include:

  • Societies

  • Family/Community Contributions

  • Creative or performing arts

  • Work/internship experience

  • Sports

  • Volunteer

  • Helping others

  • other

UBC's new admissions policy will examine students in three steps

  • The first step is to look at the student's overall curriculum in grades 11 and 12 (second and third year of high school in China), including what elective courses they took and their average score.

  • The second step is to look at the core courses that the student will take in grades 11 and 12 (second and third year of high school in China), which are courses closely related to the major they are applying for. For example, if a student wants to major in science, in addition to English and math, they can choose two from biology, chemistry, physics, and geology.

  • The third step is to examine the student's core 12th-grade courses. For liberal arts, this is English; for science, engineering, and business, these are math and English. When examining 11th and 12th-grade courses, electives such as applied design, skill and technology, physical and health education, and career and personal planning are excluded.
