On June 1, all students in kindergarten through fifth grade will be able to attend school half-time, while students in grades 6 through 12 will be able to attend school the equivalent of one day a week. During this period, schools may only be at a maximum of 50% capacity for kindergarten through fifth grade, and no more than 20% for grades 6 through 12. Children of essential workers and students requiring additional support may choose to attend school full-time.
To prepare for the September reopening, Minister Frank Lloyd-Frank appointed a steering committee composed of teachers, parents, Indigenous peoples, support staff, principals, vice-principals, school boards and trustees, and public health representatives. The committee will develop a variety of reopening scenarios based on best practices. The committee will review lessons learned from March to June, identify current or potential issues, recommend solutions, and develop and provide resources for parents and teachers. The government is committed to providing families and educators with regular updates so they can plan for the new school year.

During the epidemic, teachers and support staff ensured that students strictly followed health and safety standards, including maintaining greater distance between desks, reducing physical contact, practicing the habit of cleaning hands, measures to block droplets, cleaning frequently touched surfaces twice a day, and setting clear guidelines for pick-up, lunch and recess.
Teachers are also using innovative and creative methods to help students, such as arranging online music performances, using video games to keep students active and physically challenged, teaching Indigenous cooking, and using video games to conduct treasure hunts together, so that students still feel fulfilled. Through Zoom, 35,000 teachers in British Columbia schools can connect with students online using the secure platform.
Our goal is to welcome as many students back to the classroom as possible in September, once Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry deems it safe. We have established a five-phase reopening plan to ensure schools can respond quickly even if a second wave occurs. Each of these five phases adheres to strict health and safety guidelines from the Provincial Health Officer, the BC Centre for Disease Control, and WorkSafeBC.

Teri Mooring -
Paul Faoro -
Andrea Sinclair –
